Born April 28, 1924, Lubwa, near Chinsali, Northern Rhodesia [now Zambia] ; Died: June 17, 2021, Lusaka, Zambia (aged 97) ;
Kenneth Kaunda’s upbringing among the Bemba people was indeed shaped by his father, David Julizya, who was a pioneer missionary for the Church of Scotland in Chief Nkula’s area of Chinsali. Despite his father’s early death in 1932 when Kaunda was just eight years old, his legacy in evangelization and education left a significant impact on the community. David Julizya’s efforts included not only preaching but also establishing elementary schools and serving as a voluntary welfare officer. His dedication to his mission led him to travel extensively, reaching remote parts of the district to spread the word of God and oversee the work of teachers in the schools he helped establish.
